Last Thursday, we reported nearly 70 structures were on fire as a result of numerous explosions throughout the Merrimack Valley.

Now, the cause of the explosions has been revealed.

According to a tweet posted on WCVB’s Twitter account, the cause of the explosions was indeed due to over-pressurization of lines belonging to Columbia Gas.

As you know, the blasts killed one individual and injured several more.

The NTSB also warned that their findings were just the beginning of the investigation.

Immediately following the explosions, Governor Baker ordered mandatory evacuations for people in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover.

After frustration grew in the community, Baker appointed Eversource to oversee operations — Citing an inadequate response to the situation by Columbia Gas.

Earlier today, residents were allowed to return to their homes, after their homes were deemed safe.

At this time, Columbia Gas has not issued a statement regarding the NTSB’s findings.
