Catch Of The Week: Lexi James
Meet: Singer/songwriter Lexi James from Boxford, MA, now living in Durham, NH
Fun fact: According to research redheads are more sensitive to hot and cold. Another fun fact, redheaded Lexi James is a talented songwriter who’s sensitive take on the world and hot vocals make her a cool Catch! Lexi’s skills go beyond her singing and songwriting abilities. There’s a fearlessness in her performance. But it’s far from cockiness, or over-confidence. Her strength appears to come from her sensitivity. Fear and compassion are met head -on, and used for a passionate performance. Advantage: James.
Lexi got into music, in part to overcome a disadvantage. She told me, “I’ve always loved music and loved to sing but there were really 2 main things that lead me to music. The first one was my stutter. I started to stutter when I was 10 and when I really got into music at around 14, singing was my escape from all of my fears surrounding my stutter, because I don’t stutter when I sing. But at the same time, it forced me to face that fear head on because I have to talk on stage and do radio interviews and all of the things that terrified me the most. But my love for music has always been more important than my fear of my stutter. The second thing that lead me to music is my stepdad. He’s been a musician his entire life and music was what bonded us from the start. It’s the foundation of our relationship and, other than my mom, he’s one of my biggest fans and one of the biggest reasons I’ve been brave enough to follow my dreams.”

- How would you describe your sound: I always say that my sound is country pop. I think my music is a cross between Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Swift
- Instruments played: Guitar, ukulele, and starting to learn piano!
- Who inspires you: Musically, Keith Urban is definitely one of my favorite artists all around. Whitney Houston was the first voice I heard that made me want to sing. The Beatles have always been a huge inspiration for me in so many ways. Seeing Taylor Swift be a writer and be so close to my age inspired me so much to start writing my own songs. I could go on for a long time about how so many different artists inspired me in so many different ways. But when I think of someone who has inspired my life as a whole, it’s my mom, hands down. She is the hardest working, kindest, most giving, selfless, beautiful soul I’ve ever known in my entire life
- Awards/accolades: First ever winner of New England Sings (created and run by Grammy winning songwriter Kara DioGuardi)
2018 Nominee for Female Performer of the Year at the New England Music Awards
- All- time favorite country song: (or songs if you can’t name just one): THIS IS ALWAYS SUCH A HARD QUESTION! I Will Always Love You is the first one that comes to mind. Both the Dolly and Whitney versions. They’re both such beautifully different renditions of an incredibly written song. I know when people think of Patsy Cline they automatically think of Crazy and I LOVE that song, but personally, I’m a bigger fan of I Fall To Pieces and Sweet Dreams. Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw came out just as I was dipping my toes into the country waters and it definitely made me fall more in live with country music. Somebody Like You by Keith Urban is one of my all time favorite songs of any genre. And I’d say Bless The Broken Road, because it made me fall in love with Rascal Flatts and it was my mom and stepdad’s wedding song!
- Favorite country concert: KEITH URBAN. I’ve seen him 3 times in concert and his shows are without a doubt the best I’ve ever been to
-
Current Country 1025 favorites: I’m obsessed with Old Dominion’s “Hotel Key” right now!
-
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing: I’ve always said that if I couldn’t sing, I’d love to be a dancer!
-
Day Job (if applicable): Full time musician
- Most proud moment: I’ve had a few! On a more personal level, all of the times I’ve faced my fears of stuttering on stage, in radio interviews and spots, etc. On a more musical level, I recently attended a songwriting seminar held by Nashville Songwriter’s Association International and hosted by Grammy award winning songwriter Liz Rose. Liz and a couple of her employees at her publishing house told me how much they loved one of my songs and it was one of those totally surreal moments I wish I could frame and hang on my wall! Haha
-
Craziest thing that ever happened in your music career: This is so strange. but I had a woman come up to me one time and ask to take a picture of my butt before a show because “I had the nicest a** she’d ever seen.” It was awkward to say the least!
-
Other things you like to do: I’m kind of a homebody honestly haha I love to stay home and watch Netflix and movies. But I also love to go to the movies, go bowling, and, since I actually really love my job, I love to be playing shows and writing songs!
- Fun facts: I can hyperextend my elbows (it really grosses my stepdad out lol), I LOVEEE Halloween and going to haunted houses…I love being scared! And I can do a pretty convincing turkey imitation. My gobble is spot on
Catch Lexi James In Concert
