What Influenced Old Dominion’s New Album?
Old Dominion stopped by to chat with Jonathan and Ayla about their new album!
We found out Ayla may have a super power, she thinks can predict what the band’s next single will be. Previously she guessed correctly about ‘One Man Band’, but the guys wouldn’t confirm what the next one will be so we’ll just have to wait and see! What do you think their next single should be?
Their album also just hit number one on Billboard‘s Top Country Albums chart which was bittersweet as they knocked Luke Combs out of the spot. Luke has tied with Shania Twain as the longest running album on the chart with 50 weeks at number one. Jonathan asked how Old Dominion felt ‘to crush the dreams of young Luke Combs’, they joked, “Do you know how many times he’s (Luke) crushed our dreams?”
“I feel like Shania owes us a fruit basket or something.”
Old Dominion wrote all 12 songs on the new album so we had to ask what their favorite one is vs the fan favorites. ‘One Man Band’ leads as a fan favorite, but ‘My Heart Is A Bar’ and ‘Some People Do’ have also been getting reactions. They note that different shows mean different reactions.
Not only have they written many amazing songs for themselves, they’ve also written for a lot of other artists. During their live performances, they like to pay tribute by doing a ‘Nashville songwriter night’ style section. They’ll perform these songs acoustically and share the stories behind them, this ends up being a lot of fan’s favorite part of the set.
Ayla mentioned how she heard many influences in the new album, Matthew says they didn’t try to tap into anyone specifically, but allowed those influences in. He mentioned John Mayer, The Eagles, and Bruce Springsteen as overall influences along with Pearl Jam and the Allman Brothers. Hip hop, motown, and even grunge also played apart in the sound of the new album.
