WWE Ice Cream Bars ARE BACK… And I Reviewed Them
When I found out that WWE was bringing back their iconic WWE Ice Cream Bars from the 80’s/90’s I was so excited – they were a huge part of my childhood and always my go-to when the ice cream truck stocked them. I put a post up at Country1025.com when I found out they were coming back and I was really pleasantly surprised at the large number of people who shared in the excitement.
Stop & Shop stores in the Northeast are now stocking the bars so…… I had to follow-up and review the reboot bars. Shout out to my wife Kristin for stopping at the store after a long day at work to make my inner-child happy. Thank you Kristin, love you. I must say before we begin that I have a fuzzy memory about a lot of things – but for some reason I have a perfect memory when it comes to the classic WWE Ice Cream Bars. I ate a lot of them… and loved them… so I will harshly compare the new to the old. Let’s begin…
First of all the boxes are awesome. They kind of have a throwback look – “Macho Man” definitely helps that. And there’s something that just makes me happy seeing the Good Humor logo on the same box as the WWE logo. Thumbs up.
Opening the box and grabbing one, I noticed that they’re now wrapped in plastic instead of that old white paper they used to be wrapped in – no big deal, just different. What else is different? A lot. They’re now sandwiches instead of bars. There are 2 cookies filled with vanilla ice cream. Each cookie has a Superstar printed on it – I got a John Cena/Becky Lynch.
Another difference is the printing of the Superstar on the cookie. It sucks. On the box they look bold and dark like the old bars used to look. In reality the printing is pretty light and a little blurry. Thumbs down. Also – with 2 cookies, there is now no chocolate involved. The old bars were cookie, ice cream, chocolate coating. The chocolate is gone. Thumbs down. But most importantly, on to the taste:
Ugggg! So different!! They now taste like “cake batter” or “birthday cake” flavored things. The bar/sandwich was fine – my two daughters who had never tasted the original liked them. I did not. It was too sweet for me. I remember the old cookie wasn’t that sweet. It was kind of like blah shortbread. But with the vanilla ice cream and chocolate coating it was great. Better than great – it was perfect – it was my childhood. This bar/sandwich reminded me of an iconic movie that gets rebooted and you’re optimistic about it, but when you go and see it you realize you should have just watched the original again.
New kids will enjoy these, old nerds like myself? Get them, try them, but don’t be sad when you realize your childhood is gone. Until somebody builds a time machine. Then let’s go back and go all-you-can-eat-frenzy on those bars.
