Candlepin Bowling Was Invented in Worcester in the 1880’s, It’s Last Alley Just Closed Down
Candlepin bowling has been a New England staple for as long as I can remember (and beyond). It was born in Worcester, Mass way back in the 1880’s. In 1955 there were 12,000 candlepin players playing in leagues. And now, candlepin bowling is no more in Worcester. The last candlepin bowling alley there, Colonial Bowling Center, has closed after 60 years due in part to the coronavirus crises.
The building that houses the alley is 17,000-square-feet and is valued at $1.2 million. No decision about the future of the building has been made.
