Thomas Rhett called in to Jonathan Wier and Ayla Brown to talk about what he’s been up to since he’s been off the road this past month, as well as how he collaborated on both Beer Can’t Fix and Be A Light.
Thomas has been taking it one day at a time and appreciating the day that’s with us. With his growing family, this time off has led to more quality time then he could have imagined. He says “I’ve never been home this long, I don’t think in like 10 years,” but he is loves having the time to be the best dad and husband he can be.
Thomas mentions that he’s writing more now than ever. Not being able to see anyone to record has been odd, but it’s allowed him to learn so much including recording his own vocals and learning how to create demos. It’s forced him to become a better musician, a better songwriter, and a better singer. He also teased that the next record could be called “From The Basement.”
Jonathan asked how Thomas and Jon Pardi created Beer Can’t Fix as they couldn’t be together. Thomas wrote the song out in California and he knew Jon needed to be on it. Jon loved the song, he recorded it separately the next week and it was done. Thomas says it was one of the easiest asks he’s ever had with a duet.
Another big song of his right now is Be A Light with Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, and Keith Urban. Thomas wrote the song last year while on tour and it only took him about an hour, “when you know what you want to say, somehow it just falls out when it’s supposed to.” He wasn’t sure if it was going to be on a new album or a single, but when March hit he knew this could be a beacon of light for people having a difficult time. It took about three weeks to record with all the artists and was released on his birthday, March 30th. When Thomas heard it for the first time it almost brought him to tears.
