Jimmie Allen On How To Be More Open About Racial Discussions
“Hateful words don’t welcome a listening ear.”
Country music singer, Jimmie Allen was so proud of himself for coming up with that quote, and as a station, we want to say to Jimmie, we are listening! Ayla Brown sat down with Jimmie Allen in a Zoom interview and the first question she asked him was to, in his perspective, talk about his experience as a black country music singer. But also, what can the country music community do to be more understanding and open about racial discussions?
Jimmie explained that he grew up loving everyone, but his parents told him that “There might be people who might treat you different because of how they were raised and the lack of knowledge they may have.”
“Kind of how I looked at the whole George Floyd thing, it was probably the craziest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.” Jimmie waited a few days to respond because approach is everything. He wanted people to “open their eyes and their hearts.”
“At the end of the day, I feel like if you shove goodness and love in people’s face for so long, they’ve got two choices. They can either adapt to that mentality, or they can learn to keep their hate to themselves because nobody wants to hear it.”
