Chocolate Sales Surge During Pandemic (Duh!)
We are definitely in need of some comfort in these times and it seems many have turned to our old friend chocolate for some of that comfort. The National Confectioners Association announced a spike in demand for chocolate during the COVID-19 crisis.
While the overall candy market grew by 3.8 percent, non-premium chocolate expanded by 5.5 percent and premium chocolate sales rose by 12.5 percent. We’re buying more of the fancy stuff.
And we seem to be buying candy much more at grocery stores: candy sales are up 16.6% in the supermarket channel, with chocolate up 17.9%, and premium chocolate up 21.4%, while non-chocolate is up 13.5%.
