Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild Won’t ‘Shut Up And Sing’
Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild has been one of country music’s most outspoken voices when it comes to politics.
Karen told us, “I literally cannot take it when people say, ‘Just shut up and sing,’ especially when you’re you’re not saying anything. It’s not a statement. Maybe you’re just saying something about humanity and it still gets twisted into ‘Why don’t you just shut up and sing?’ And a lot of times I really want to fire back and say I’m a citizen, too.”
She continued, “I mean, why do I not have a right to say what I think? But I think in our format, since the Dixie Chicks, we’ve all become very afraid and that bums me out because it’s okay. I think it’s okay to say what you believe as long as you’re doing it in kindness and love.”
Fairchild adds, “I’ve been so, so proud, especially of our national treasure that is Dolly Parton, to come out and talk about every injustice that went on this year and to put her money out there for covid relief. She makes me proud of country music and she’s the shining example of how you do it and how you do it so well.”
She concludes, “I think that it’s starting to change. And I think there’s been other people like Chris Stapleton, there’s been Brett Cobb. There’s been lots of people that have come out and made some statements about how they feel about things. And it wasn’t always taken well. But they’re still here and they’re all doing just fine, you know. So, yeah, I’m proud of us. And I think it’s going to keep going.”
