The Day Dolly Called
Throughout the course of my career here at Country 1025, I’ve had the extreme pleasure and great opportunity of speaking with many, many country artists.
There was probably no greater honor than back in 2008, when I had the privilege of speaking with the woman who embodies and embraces the spirit of country music, above all others, Dolly Parton.
Ironically, I came across this recorded gem last week. I literally hadn’t listened to it since then. Perfect timing, as today with celebrate the queen of country music on her 75th birthday!
Today, Dolly is more relevant than ever. She has comforted us on social media and on television during this pandemic. She has championed for science, and was one of the major funders of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. According to USA Today, a report by the New England Journal of Medicine credited Dolly Parton for a donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the Moderna vaccine. She donated $1 million to fund research for the vaccine.
In this interview we talk about Kenny Chesney, her “neighbor,” as I had just played a Kenny song, while Dolly was on hold. Can you imagine, we had Dolly Parton on hold, waiting to speak? She had also just appeared as a mentor on American Idol for the first time, and had just released her 42 solo studio album, Backwoods Barbie. Ms. Parton was excited to talk about her new “CD” (that’s what we used to call ’em kids), and touring.
