Mickey Guyton: ‘There Were Times I Thought I Would Quit’
Mickey Guyton will be performing for the first time at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (3/14) where she is a nominee for Best Country Solo Performance for her song “Black Like Me.”
Mickey said of the nomination, “Getting my first Grammy nomination for ‘Black Like Me’ means the absolute world to me. I’ve been pursuing music for a very, very, very long time, and there are many times that I thought I was going to quit.”
She added, “And my music journey didn’t change until I stopped running away from who I really am, embracing who I really am, and opening the door for other people, other people that are marginalized.”
Guyton recently posted to Instagram about the song, saying, “This song means so much to me. I never in a million years thought that “Black Like Me” would get the attention that it has. It allowed me to shine a light on my experiences as a Black woman in America, but so many other people’s experiences too. This is our story.”
