Contessa, The Newbury Boston’s Rooftop Restaurant, Has Opened in Back Bay
If you’re looking for a new summer lunch or dinner spot… Contessa is the place to be!
The Newbury Boston, a 5-star hotel in the Back Bay formerly known as Taj Boston, just went under a two-year modern renovation and finally reopened it’s doors in mid-May. Contessa, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar, just opened the the public yesterday for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks.
Contessa is operated by Major Food Group, the New York-based restaurant group behind popular spots like Carbone and Sadelle’s. The 4,000 square-foot spot has a glass rooftop with custom interiors and beautiful views of Boston, featuring amazing Italian dishes and classic cocktails and historical food nods. This one of the city’s only restaurants that overlooks the Public Garden.
“When we discussed what we were going to do here with our partners, we had kind of landed that we wanted to do an Italian restaurant here,” Mario Carbone, co-founder of Major Food Group, told Boston.com. “I started to work backwards and tell this story of the Contessa. This was the first Ritz-Carlton in America, so I started to think of this Italian aristocrat that may have come over as the first of her generation… Invariably, she would have come from the north — that’s where aristocracy was at the time — so then that starts to lead into the food, and you start to build the blocks of the story.”
Ken Fulk, the designer of Cortessa, is a long-time resident of Boston. He partnered with Major Food Group to set the tone for the restaurant, with mid-century modern decor, including velvet seats and banquettes. Check out more photos below and click here to see the menu.
