Women In Country Music: Lainey Wilson
American country singer and songwriter, Lainey Wilson was born and raised in a small town in Louisiana. She refers to her style of country music as “bell-bottom country,” which is a blend of classic country and rock with a modern twist. She was raised on country music and began listening to it as a little girl. Her mother was a school teacher and her father was a farmer. Her father taught her to play a few chords on the guitar, and she was writing her own songs by nine years old. Lainey released an EP on Myspace called Country Girls Rule when she was just 14 years old.
After finishing high school in 2011, Lainey moved to Nashville, where they lived in a trailer set up in the parking lot of a recording studio. Her manager and owner of this recording studio, Jerry Cuprit, was a friend of her father’s. With his help, they were able to release her first album, Lainey Wilson.
In 2016, she released her second album Tougher, and it charted on Billboard’s Top Country Albums list that year. Two years later in 2018, she released another EP featuring six original tracks. This EP opened a lot of doors for her and got the attention of Sony Music where she signed a record deal with Broken Bow Records. She then went on tour opening for Morgan Wallen, the first of many country artists Lainey would go on to tour with.
After touring, Lainey released an EP “Redneck Hollywood,” containing four original songs. This was about her journey from growing up in a small town in Louisiana to living the dream of traveling and seeing the world. She makes it clear that she will always be a redneck at heart, no matter where her career takes her.
In 2021 she released her first major-label album Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin‘. The album included her two biggest songs, “A Man Oughta Know,” which reached number one on country charts, and “Dirty Looks.” This album put her on the map and jump-started her career, earning her a spot on Jason Aldean’s tour.
Lainey just released a song with Cole Swindell, “Never Say Never,” and we can’t wait to see what she does next!
