Mass woman had no idea she was pregnant until it was too late. What is a cryptic pregnancy?
A woman from Bourne who didn’t realize she was pregnant has given birth after experiencing stomach pains.
A woman who went to the emergency room early Tuesday morning with what she thought was appendicitis was shocked to discover that she was pregnant. Turns out she had what is called a “cryptic pregnancy”.
And not only that she was already in labor!
Brittney Malouin posted on Facebook Wednesday to announce the arrival of her “MIRACLE baby,” Gavin Robert Grady.
On Tuesday, when Malouin went into labor, a urine test administered that day was negative, but a blood test was positive.
The ultrasound tech turned to her and told her that she was not only pregnant, but that she was in active labor at that very moment. The pain she was feeling was contractions, and the baby was on the way, she said.
Very few cryptic pregnancies occur, Malouin wrote on Facebook. According to research, only about 1 in 475 women get pregnant and don’t realize it until after the 20th week of pregnancy. Even fewer don’t realize they’re pregnant until they give birth. This ratio increases to 1 in 2500 women.
In addition, she reported that this is not the first time she’s experienced a cryptic pregnancy.
According to Malouin last year she carried her son Bennett, for 22 weeks before realizing she was pregnant with him. The family just celebrated Bennett’s first birthday a few weeks ago.
The parents are going to be busy caring for the two new babies as well as their equally shocked but delighted siblings.
“These two (big siblings) don’t want to go to bed,” the father told CBS Boston, “so when Bennett needs a bottle and Gavin needs a bottle, it’s going to be something.”
