See What The Celtics Are Doing At The Garden To Honor Bill Russell
The next time you go to a Celtics game, the parquet floor will look different. The Boston Celtics have added the number 6 to the parquet paint to honor legend Bill Russell. The organization painted Russell’s number in the free throw lanes of the floor, to honor the late NBA Hall of Famer, who passed away July 31 this year, at age 88. The parquet floor tribute will be there for the entire season. On Monday, the Celtics said, “The team has added the number 6 to both lanes to pay homage to Bill Russell’s dominant play in the paint.”
But wait, there’s more! The NBA also announced every team in the league will retire Bill’s #6. Russell was not only an 11 time NBA Champ, but also a civil rights pioneer. According to NBC Sports, there will be other celebrations of the legend’s life and career. One of the special events will take place at the Celtics season opener on October 18 and another is set for what would have been Russell’s 89th birthday, on February 12. “There will also be something on their regular uniforms to honor him,” NBC reports.
