Review: Carrie Underwood’s Lexington Show Was On Fire
Carrie Underwood enjoyed a packed house of screaming fans in Lexington, Kentucky, last night (10/20) on her “Denim & Rhinestones” tour, and this journalist was one of them.
Before the show got underway, I had the chance to talk with tour opener Jimmie Allen, and he raved about Carrie’s performance, saying that it was “amazing.” Jimmie later joins Underwood on stage during her set to sing and dance to “Denim & Rhinestones” in a white cowboy hat and tails, and they even dance a set together as he ends with a twirl around as if he was still on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars.
Allen was not wrong, her show is wonderful, and through her remarkable vocal talents, Carrie sings, dances, swings high in the air, plays her own drum solo (something she later told us she worked on for weeks), and even sang a song (“Crazy Angels”) in the air where she did Cirque du Soleil moves on bars.
At one point in the show, it seemed to slow down a bit, so I sat down to rest a little and had to stand right back up as fire shot out from the stage during a new song from her Denim & Rhinestones album, “Burn,” each time she sings the word “Burn,” fire erupts just feet from concert goers in the first few rows.
Underwood’s vocals were flawless and big as life as she sang her first hit, “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” and launched into “How Great Thou Art” at the end of the song, she sings so dead on the audience is overwhelmed and shows their approval with roaring applause.
The fast-paced show had no less than five costume changes and closed not with her biggest hit, “Before He Cheats,” but with a hard rock edge stomping and wildly shaking her head while she covers Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome To The Jungle,” while wearing a Skid Row t-shirt.
Fun fact: After the show, she told us about the Septor microphone she sang with, much like the one Queen’s Freddy Mercury used to perform with. She noted that at the end of the Septor is a skull; she painted a red bandana on the head and blue eyes on the skull to honor Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose.
Carrie posted photos from the show on Instagram this morning (10/21). She captioned the pictures of her surrounded by fire, in a cowboy hat, playing the guitar and singing with that Septor, “Such a crazy crowd last night @rupp_arena! Thanks for coming out, Lexington! You guys rock!: @jeffjohnsonimages.”
