The New England Patriots Have 2 Million Fake Twitter Followers, Allegedly
Twitter has been all over the news lately. And now we have this: your beloved New England Patriots have millions of fake Twitter followers.
The Twitterverse has been reacting ever since Elon Musk wasn’t allowed to back out of his offer to buy the social media platform. He took over the reins back in October, and it’s been, by most rational accounts, a dumpster fire ever since. Hell, even Paul Stanley weighed in about it.
Scads of power users have been exiting the platform in recent weeks. And some of those users have come from the music world: Trent Reznor and Jack White, for instance. The disgruntled are citing, among other concerns, Musk’s reinstating of accounts that have knowingly spread disinformation. This, coupled with staff being fired or resigning and questions about Twitter’s relative safety, have thrown the social media giant into disarray.

Among the news of questionable accounts being reinstated, we have Musk crusading to ban fake accounts (and users that make fun of him). Gambling.com recently used SparkToro’s fake follower audit to find out which NFL teams and QBs have the highest number of fake followers. And according to their stats, your New England Patriots sit atop the list, with 2.1 million fake followers:
It’s no surprise that they have a massive social media following considering their major success over the past two decades, but the New England Patriots are the ones who are set to be the most affected by Musk’s crack down on fake accounts, with 2.1 million of their 4.7 million followers estimated to be fake.
There’s clearly something to this Gambling.com report: I just took a peek at the Patriots Twitter and now they’re down to 4.6 million. Of course, the Twitter purge is inconsequential, really, when you’re 6-5 and last in the AFC East.
