I’m His Mother, Which Is Why My Son Is Eating Fried Chicken Already
I am already feeding my baby solid foods. I know you don’t think I should be feeding my 7-month-old fried chicken. But that’s why I’m his mother, and you’re not!
All kidding aside, being a parent is exciting and scary at the same time. You have this tiny human that’s drinking breastmilk or formula for the first six months of their life. Then, all of a sudden your baby starts taking an interest in eating real food. They want to touch it…they want to bring it to their mouth…they want to be just like you. Is it safe to feed your baby real food at such an early age?
The App We Use To Teach Our Child How to Eat Solid Foods
I was told that at six months old babies start exploring real food. I’m not talking about purees, I mean solid, real food that you and I eat every day. I downloaded an app called “Solid Starts” because it was suggested to me by another mother.
Solid Starts is an app/website that has 200+ foods in the database. Each food is then divided into age categories. 6-9 months old, 9-12 months old, and 12-24 months old. It shows how to prepare that specific food item based on how old your child is. That’s how I knew how to cut up a mango for my son at 6 months old. And that’s why I knew I could feed my son a chicken wing at 7.5 months old.
Many parents get scared about giving their babies real food. They’re scared about them possibly choking. They’re scared about possible allergic reactions. And they’re scared about real food because honestly, it is scary when you’re doing something for the first time.
The Solid Foods We’ve Fed Our Baby
Since our son was 6 months old we have fed him the following real foods. Each one has been an adventure! There’s only one food that he hated, and it was papaya. (But who likes papaya anyways?)
- mango
- papaya
- steak
- asparagus
- carrot
- chicken wing
- tomato
- blueberry
- raspberry
- lettuce
- orange
- cucumber
- broccoli
Why Are We Feeding Him Solids At Such A Young Age?
We believe that by introducing him to real foods at an early age he will be more willing to try a variety of foods as he gets older. We are trying our hardest to not have him eat pasta, rice, or any starch carbs. Instead, the more we can have him touch his food, explore the way it feels and tastes in his mouth, hopefully the more excited he will be to eat the healthy things we put on his plate. Only time will tell if this method will work, but we are willing to give it a shot!
In the meantime though, even though our baby can’t swallow food, he’s developing the jaw muscles with every bite of carrot or broccoli.
Advice To Parents
Whenever you are ready to introduce your child to foods, check out the Solid Starts app and follow them on Instagram. They have great resources and educational tools on choking, eating, weening off of breast milk and so much more. Good luck!
