A Northeastern Student is Running For Mayor of Woburn
“I know that I am young, but I am also bold, ambitious and I have a clear vision for the future of our city.” That’s how Omar Mohuddin greets you when you visit his campaign page. Mohuddin is 19 years old. He’s a Northeastern student running for Mayor of Woburn.
Mohuddin is a Woburn native. He is currently a freshman at Northeastern University where he received a full scholarship. He’s also already made the Dean’s list. Though he has been immersed in his studies, building a better tomorrow for Woburn has remained a priority. His experience includes joining the embRACE program at Woburn high school and getting involved within community groups such as Woburn Welcomes.
“I believe in the power of the youth and their ability to bring change, and that’s why I’m running for mayor,” Mohuddin states. He sees an opportunity for a new day – where the voice of the youth population is clearly heard in Woburn.
Mohuddin spotlights First Responders and Education as two of his main focuses. Though these initiatives would require different strategies, their premise is similar. It’s all about resources. He wants to ensure that educators, the police force and public safety officials have all the necessary resources to serve the community successfully.
A Fresh Voice For a Brighter Future
“I’m not in the middle of raising a family, or a 9-to-5 job, so I have enough time to understand the problems that affect the community, Mohuddin told Boston.com. And I also am able to engage the youth in a way that they’ve never been engaged with before.”
As of now Mohuddin is the only candidate to announce he will be running in November. Incumbent Scott Galvin is expected to make a go for his 8th term. Boston.com also reported that if Mohuddin were to be elected, Northeastern will, “will count his new position toward Northeastern’s co-op program, before he starts taking classes part time.”
The youngest mayor the country has ever seen was Michael Sessions in Hillsdale, Michigan. He was elected in 2005 at the age of 18-years-old. At 19, Mohuddin would be the youngest to step in the role in the state of Massachusetts.
