Boston Has The Highest ‘Informal Helping Rate’ in The Country
AmeriCorps describes “Informal Helping” as “assisting others outside of an organizational context, including doing favors for neighbors.” And according ton an AmeriCorps report, Boston has the highest informal helping rate in the country.
The Boston Metro area had a final informal helping rate of 57.9%. This just narrowly beat out Philadelphia for the top spot. Philly Metro finished at 57.8%.
AmeriCorps compiles this data and releases the report every two years. This was a change from recent years past. This is due to the number of volunteer opportunities that arose thanks to COVID and pandemic circumstances.
What Was Different?
“Americans continued to serve one another and their communities. They helped neighbors by doing favors like watching each other’s children, running errands, and more,” AmeriCorps states. The research highlighted shows that Baby Boomers, veterans, and those with children under 18 were the groups who lent a hand the most. The most intriguing aspect of this data is that informal helping often aligns with small tasks. These are things that often go unnoticed, like picking up a neighbor’s trash can that got blown over. A silver lining to the challenging pandemic circumstances is how compassion rose to the forefront. Furthermore, there have been increased opportunities to volunteer throughout America’s 12 major metro areas.
The Boston Globe recently published stories on how the Boston communities still support each other. These are the types of stories that factored into how our metro area came together during the period AmeriCorp is reporting on. The Globe‘s story points out efforts such as a community fridge installed in Watertown, MA. Or simply, the use of sharing knowledge, and helpful information.
