Massachusetts: Major Highway To Close 5 Nights a Week
If your driving routine includes taking Storrow Drive, you’ll need to plan accordingly. Storrow Drive is the biggest named Massachusetts major highway that will close five nights per week, from April 23rd through May 21st.
NBC Boston has reported that repaving will highly impact some major inbound and outbound routes around Boston. “The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation said the closure of the major artery, along with brief closures of two adjacent roads, is for repaving work,” NBC states. The inbound closures are specific to Cambridge Street to Leverett Circle, while the outbound repave is from Leverett Circle to Mass. Ave.
In addition, David G. Mugar Way and Leverrett Circle will be closed from April 24th to April 28. They too, will follow the nine hour overnight shutdown.
Storrow Drive
Storrow Drive runs east-west along the Charles River. A main attraction to this route is that it is for cars only. Trucks and busses are not permitted. But without a breakdown lane or a shoulder, Storrow has always been known as a challenge to navigate due to the lack of space for law enforcement. In addition, there are no traffic lights along the route. Furthermore, Storrow has exits providing access to major Boston points (like Kenmore, Boston University, and Fenway) in addition to Cambridge.

Leverett Circle
Completely redesigned during “The Big Dig” Leverett Circle is the merging point of Storrow Drive, Charles River Dam Road (Northern Artery), Nashua Street, Charles Street, and Martha Road. Leverett Circle provides an Interstate 93 northbound entrance and an offramp from 93 southbound.
Mugar Way
It’s important to call out that during this repave, there will be no parking along Mugar Way. With its proximity to Longfellow Bridge and Charles Street, Mugar Way is often a common area to search for spots.
Police detail will be onsite to assist in safely navigating to closures. Traffic patterns will be clearly marked. Drivers are encouraged to plan accordingly and seek alternatives now that this major Massachusetts highway will be closed five nights.
