Best Cities For Motorcyclists: Where Does Boston Rank?
Spring is officially upon us, and we have entered the Memorial Day weekend month. Therefore, numerous outdoor adventures are kicking into high gear, including motorcylcling. Let’s take a look at where Boston ranked in AutoInsurance.org‘s recently published best city for motorcyclists report.
Of all the major metros across the country, Boston ranked as the 34th best city for motorcyclists. Examining the local weather was a key factor in what AutoInsurance.org looked at in order to determine the best cities to ride. They found Boston typically has 127 annual days of precipitation on per year. The average temperature in the state of Massachusetts is 48 degrees.
City Conditions
Safety was the second most important data point examined in this report. AutoInsurance.org found that there are 7.44 motorcycle related deaths per one million residents. It’s important to note that helmet laws are not the same in every state. The state of Massachusetts is one of the more strict in this category requiring all drivers to wear a helmet by law. In addition, all motorcycle passengers (including sidecar) must wear a helmet.
Where To Ride
“Open roads, little traffic, great curves, and inspiring views. They’re all a big part of what makes heading out on two wheels so appealing, AutoInsurance.org states about what they look for physically in each greater city area. “Whether it’s a well-traveled favorite or a brand-new route, finding the best places for motorcycle riders is an ongoing adventure,” they conclude.
Statista reports, that their last public compilation showed Massachusetts had 147,488 motorcycle registrations in a year.
So where do they go? Heading out of the city, there are a lot of great motorcycle adventures to embark on in New England. Riding Mohawk Trail that runs east and west across the north of Massachusetts is one of the most popular routes. It’s 72 miles of forest trails and scenic towns , with plenty of open road space.
Furthermore, the Quabbin Reservoir Loop is about 90 miles from Boston. It contains quieter roads with tight bends that take you through the middle of the state, traveling along miles of farmland.
In Conclusion:
Boston ranked out of the 51 markets examined to determine the best city for motorcyclists is not great. Much of that has to do with the seasonal weather and not having access to ride for many months out of the year. Motorcycle parking in the city can be challenging as well. Nonetheless, we have reached the season for motorcycles to come out of the garage and hit the open road to Quabbin Reservoir.
