Bikini-Clad Seagull Statue Ruffles Feathers in Massachusetts Community
The quirky statue, known as “Seagull Cinderella,” has once again found itself at the center of controversy in New Bedford. Sculpted by artist Donna Dodson, the artwork features the head of a seagull atop the body of a scantily-clad woman and was first installed along Route 18 back in 2016. However, its debut was met with mixed reactions as some residents found the piece too sexually suggestive, prompting complaints and debates over its appropriateness. Due to this the statue was moved to Maynard. But… it’s baaaaaaccccckkkkkk.
Recently returned to New Bedford, the sculpture is once again the subject of complaints and a removal petition, despite Dodson’s alterations to cover the previously nude figure with a daisy bikini and skirt. The artist insists “Seagull Cinderella” is meant to be empowering and is inspired by imagining Cinderella as a seagull. While some residents disapprove, city officials support the artwork and have requested it remain in place for now. The debate showcases art’s ability to evoke emotions and spark conversations, leaving the peculiar charm of the seagull-headed maiden to enchant and challenge observers along Route 18.
