Taylor Swift Eras Concert Cheers Register as 2.3 Magnitude Earthquake
Taylor Swift’s concerts in Seattle last weekend created seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3-magnitude earthquake, as over 72,000 fans danced and jumped together. Seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach named the phenomenon the “Swift Quake,” comparing it to the infamous “Beast Quake” caused by Seattle Seahawks fans in 2011.
I guess I should show the data. Swifties > Seahawks fans.

(except data from the concert may not be caused by the fans--it may be the sound system, so not really a fair comparison). pic.twitter.com/szwowOYQFi
The tremors during Swift’s performances of “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” were the most intense, lasting throughout the three-and-a-half-hour concerts. Both shows were sold out, with 72,171 concertgoers in attendance, breaking a record set by U2 in 2011. Swift expressed her gratitude to her fans on Instagram, writing “Seattle that was genuinely one of my favorite weekends ever. Thank you for everything. All the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs.”
Let’s give you a chance to create your own “Swift-Quake.” Crank the following 13 Taylor Swift songs at your next neighborhood or house party and maybe you’ll be the epicenter of the next “Swift-Quake,” which sounds like a way better thing than a “Sharknado.” But I could see Syfy cranking out a quick “Swift-Quake” movie just to jump on the moment. And honestly, I’d watch it. I’m looking for a new show right now.
