Boston: Barstool Sports 20th Anniversary Will Be At House Of Blues
What was once a free newspaper handed out at subway stations (with essentially a clipart stool logo) is now a massive company holding an anniversary extravaganza. Barstool Sports will be returning to Boston and to celebrate their 20th-anniversary with an awards show this Wednesday at the House of Blues.
“That’s what the common guy likes doing, that’s what we do,” Barstool Sports Founder and President Dave Portnoy says in their anniversary promotion video.
Coincidentally, sticking to their original tagline of “By the common man, for the common man,” may be more relevant now than ever. After almost seven years of working in partnership with another ownership group, Barstool Sports is now back to being all in-house and in the hands of Portnoy. On August 8, Portnoy held one of his signature “Emergency Press Conferences” to announce he had repurchased all of the company.
Perhaps it’s appropriate that two weeks later, the Barstool will hold a bash in their original backyard. They will celebrate 20 years of what has made this rocket ship continually head towards the moon.
Barstool By The Numbers
Over the past 20 years, the company has grown to over 500 employees. Their 500k original videos have resulted in over 50 billion video views. Along the way there have been live tailgate shows at the biggest college football stadiums, pizza in every shape and size, and one of the most popular sports podcasts in the country with Pardon My Take.
What To Expect At The Anniversary Show
Although the event will be hosted by Portnoy, most of Barstool’s biggest personalities are expected to be in attendance. This includes Dan “Big Cat” Katz and Kevin “KFC” Clancy, who are among the earliest employees in the company’s history.
“We will look back at the history of Barstool Sports and deliver awards for the best and the worst the last 20 years had to offer,” Barstool Sports states.
The even will also stream live starting at 7:15pm. Where? Well, on their own Barstool.tv platform, of course.
Massachusetts: Local Street Art Is Getting National Exposure
A New Bedford, Massachusetts street art display is now getting national attention by being published in a book by Simon & Schuster.
On the Wall Posters: Street Art is described as a one-of-a-kind collection of posters, all from local artists. This book showcases 30 graffiti and street mural-inspired wall posters. Furthermore, it is all from the local mural art project, Superflat NB.
Founded in 2017, Superflat NB works directly with New Bedford’s residents and other artists around the world. Together, they are creating transformative public art. The collection of posters they will be publishing into a colorful book will bring these art pieces to life. In fact, you can now insert them right into your home.
What Superflat means
Japanese contemporary artist, “Takashi Murakami coined the term to express spatial compression and the blending of high and low art in his own work.” Superflat NB explains via their website. “Surperflat NB will provide access to the arts by directly engaging New Bedford’s youth, artists, and its residents in the ideation and creation of transformative public art through the traditions of mural-making,” they conclude. Their aim is to revitalize the city of New Bedford by inspiring youth with this creative outlet. In addition, their murals will bring national artists’ work into the community.
Book Introduction
“Today, street art is used worldwide for self-expression and to add character to unexpected places,” the book quotes. What can you expect to find when you crack open this poster book? On The Wall Posters: Street Art explains it as “wildstyle graffiti tags and colorful B-boy characters, to pop-art, stencil-style mural and more.”
Here, we will look at three pieces featured in this Massachusetts street art book that will now receive national distribution.
The book is available for pre-order now. It will be officially released on September 19, 2023. In the meantime, you preview the images and find more information on their Simon & Schuster page.
