FIRST SNOW ALERT: First Flakes of the Season Fall at Mount Washington
Are you ready?
I said, are… you… ready?
Well really it doesn’t matter if we’re ready or not because, it happened. The first flakes of the season have already fallen, pre-September. Daaaaaaannnnnggg.
6am. Thursday August 31st. The Mount Washington Observatory posted this to their Facebook page:
They say in the post “This morning, the summit is seeing temperatures dip below freezing for the first time since early June and we have also observed the first glaze ice & snowflakes of the 2023/24 season.” They go on to say that the snow is only at 6000 feet and higher and that it’ll melt quickly so don’t go calling it winter already because IT’S STILL SUMMER!!! I blame all this Pumpkin Spice mumbo jumbo. We start guzzling it to soon and throw off the balance of the universe.
Snow generally doesn’t start falling on Mount Washington until October or September so just consider this a little present from Mother Nature!! How sweet! Now hopefully she’ll chill out for a little while.
However, the Farmer’s Almanac doesn’t think that that’ll be the case. They have forecast a long, cold, snowy winter for the upcoming season so maybe Mount Washington is just giving us a little preview of the back aches that are about to be snowed upon us. Nooooooooooooo.
And even though this first snow was only at 6000 feet and above, we have been slammed in the summertime in Boston and New England before. Here are 9 times it significantly snowed in Spring and Summer in Boston. Cruel, cruel jokes, Mother Nature.
Anyway, please enjoy the rest of your summer. And hopefully we won’t be drinking hot cocoa in snow forts before it’s over. But if that does sound good to you just make your own hot cocoa and drink it in the freezer section of your local Market Basket. It’s too soon for the rest of us.
