When you think of expensive places to live, you likely think of resort areas in Hawaii or Colorado. In fact, Breckenridge, Colorado is ranked as one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S. But, ranking even higher is a place close to home. According to a recent report, a Massachusetts town is the most expensive in the country.
As reported in the online lending marketplace, LendingTree, Vineyard Haven on Martha's Vineyard ranked #1 as the most expensive town in America. Keep in mind it includes the Vineyard Haven metro, which includes all of Martha’s Vineyard. The report showed the median home value of $857,000 in Vineyard Haven.
The Report
LendingTree's findings are the result of a comparison of median income and home values in towns with populations between 10,000 and 50,000. As revealed in Boston.com it wasn't just the home values that have Vineyard Haven's home prices so high. This area has the lowest rate of home SALES in the last 10 years. Experts say the high interest rates contribute to the lack of buying. It was also reported that the average home sale went up around 9% last year. That brings the mean to about $2.3 million.
The Top 10
What are the top 10 most expensive towns in America? Following Vineyard Haven, is Breckenridge, Colorado and Jackson, Wyoming to make up the top three. By the way, Vineyard Haven, Jackson and Hailey, Idaho have home values about 8.5 % higher than the median area household incomes.
Also in the top 10 most expensive towns in the country are Steamboat Springs, Colorado at #4. Hailey, Idaho is #5, followed by Gardnerville Ranchos, Nevada, Hood River, Oregon and Juno, Alaska. #9 and 10 are Ellensburg, Washington and Los Alamos, New Mexico.
