THIS Massachusetts Bookstore Is Wicked Old. How Old? The Oldest!
Think about this. A business built the same year Abraham Lincoln was born is STILL in operating. Although slightly incognito, you will find it on Main Street in Andover. This Massachusetts bookstore is wicked old. How old? The oldest in Massachusetts. But wait, there’s more. It’s the oldest in the country.
The Andover Bookstore has lived many lives. It’s survived various locations and owners over the centuries. But here it still stands, 214 years later. Oh, if the books could talk. Actually, they do, kind of.
MassLive talked to the Andover Bookstore’s general manager, Sarah Klock. She shared that the bookstore was originally part of Phillips Academy. But, it now has a home in an English Tudor style house that was at one time the town doctor’s digs. So much history in the building, the business and the books! Cheers to the oldest independent bookstore in America. Here’s a peek inside…

According to the Andover Bookstore website, it’s not just about the books. It’s about community, arts, expression. The bookstore hosts many events throughout the year. Past events include the midnight release parties celebrating the the new Harry Potter titles, date nights for singles, and even a wedding! They’ve had many artists entertain in this historic place. From musicians to painters and even actors. Henry Winkler is among the notables, as is illustrator and writer of “Strega Nona”, Tomie dePaola, poet and writer Donald Hall, and auto racer Robert Pinsky.
You know this place is special, and appreciative of their place and their history when it’s written on the Andover Bookstore site: “Proud to be the literary and cultural nexus of our town, we will continue to create opportunities for the community to come together in celebration of literature.”
