I Am Uncomfortable With What My Boyfriend Has Been Making Me Do
Alyssa wrote us a letter to say “My boyfriend likes to steal small things when we go out to dinner and I am uncomfortable with the fact that he has been putting stuff in my purse, so its actually me stealing them.” Should Alyssa look past this weird little habit? Should she stay in a relationship if she’s saying “I am uncomfortable”?
Jonathan: All right, so today for the panic button, we have a listener named Alyssa who does not want to go on air. She did not want her voice to be shared with you the audience. And the reason why is she’s, I guess, afraid of the repercussions. I have no idea. Maybe the guy she’s dating she thinks is a serial killer. Here’s what she says. Jonathan and Ayla love the show. Oh, and Jim, she says, And Jim, I’m sorry. Love the show and am so happy it’s all back together.
I wanted to write you to ask your advice. My problem is that I have a boyfriend. We’ve been dating for eight months, and he seemed like a perfectly fine gentleman. Always opened the door for me, pulled my chair out for me, made sure I was in the house before driving away, etc., etc.. Well, then last week, when we were out eating, he leaned across the table and said, Hey. Hey, let’s do something weird tonight. I got excited.
Ayla: Oh. Like I just did.
Jonathan: And he said “Put that salt shaker in your purse”. This was not innuendo.
Ayla: Oh,
Jonathan: I said, What? And he said, Come on, it’s fun. No one will notice. Put the salt shaker in your purse.
Ayla:, Like on the table? The one that’s on the table? Yes?
Jonathan: Apparently. I didn’t want to, but I did it reluctantly because he seemed really into it. When we left, he then insisted that I give him the salt shaker. When I asked him why, he just started giggling and said, It’s my thing.
Ayla: What?
But It Gets Worse
Jonathan: It gets worse. So anyway, Saturday I spent the night at his place for the first time in our relationship. And while he was sleeping, I decided to snoop around a little bit.
Ayla: Oh, don’t snoop.
Jonathan: Nothing bad. Just opening some drawers in the kitchen and the first drawer I opened was filled with salt shakers.
Ayla: I really wish you hadn’t.
Jonathan: Like, a dozen salt shakers. Top to bottom. Oh, but here’s the thing. I shut the drawer. And open the next one. And it was also.
Ayla: Oh, my gosh.
Jonathan: Filled with salt shakers.
Ayla: Oh, gosh.
Jonathan: Then the next door opened.
Ayla: No stop
Jonathan: It was filled with salt shakers, all different kinds, all from different restaurants, some with the restaurant’s name on them.
Ayla: What?
Jonathan: When he woke up, I was going to confront him. But I was so weirded out that I ended up not saying anything. And I’m freaked out by this. I know most people won’t think it’s a big deal, but I think this obviously means something deeply disturbing. It’s not like he’s poor. He’s a tax accountant. He makes good money. It’s not like he doesn’t need to steal salt. I think salt is like the last thing you ever need to steal.
Ayla: Are we sure that’s the only thing that he’s taken?
Jonathan: Oh, that’s a good question. She should have gone through all of them.
Ayla: She only got to drawer number three. Yeah. What then? Draw number four.
Jonathan: So what do you think? Should I be freaked out by this or not? That’s from Aylssa.
