Saugus Fuddruckers Closing After 35 Years in Business!
Man, this hurts to type. Fuddruckers’ Saugus location is set to close after 35 years in business. Management explained in a social media post that after lots of back and forth they were unable to agree on new terms for their lease with their landlord.
In the statement management revealed, “it is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the closure of our Saugus Fuddruckers location. Despite multiple attempts to negotiate a fair lease, however, we simply couldn’t come to an agreement with our landlord, and we were forced to make this very difficult decision.”
They added that they will run business as usual until their inevitable closing sometime in late December. Many of the Saugus employees are being transferred Fuddruckers Reading location, located inside Jordan’s Furniture. They say that location will continue serving the World’s Greatest Burgers for many years to come.
The franchise is based in Houston, Texas but the Saugus location has been a Route 1 staple since it opened in 1989. There have been so many times I saw it while driving on Route 1 and thought to stop… but never have out of my fear of being rear-ended on that crazy stretch of road! I’ll personally continue to be a customer in Reading. And I plan on going and sharing a hug and a tear with the Orange Dinosaur of Route 1, I’m sure he’s pretty bummed too.
With Fuddruckers leaving in late December that’ll leave a huge, gaping vacancy on Route 1 in Saugus. And judging by the reasoning for Fuddruckers leaving it can be assumed that rent is pretty lofty. The high rent price tag might be too much for a local entrepreneur to dish out so maybe we should look to the chains? Could it be eventually occupied by one of these 10 fast casual chain restaurants which are wildly popular… but not in Massachusetts yet:
