America’s Most Mispronounced City Is In Massachusetts
Who knew? America’s most mispronounced city is in Massachusetts.
We used to be known for the greatest sports teams. But we are still known for chowda, Boston Cream Pie, lobsta, history, music, hospitals, culture and music. THIS badge of honor, we take for granted. One of America’s most mispronounced cities is right in our own backyard.
It’s Pronounced LESTER
Whether it’s Leicester, Gloucester, or Leominster, it’s a known fact that people that are not from here butcher the names of our cities and towns. We have seen countless SNL skits and Dunks commercials hysterically serialize the names of our cities. Who could blame them? If you’re not from here, and if your life depended on it, you still won’t get them right. Let’s take the town of Leominster. Most out of towners call this LEO-minster.
Last year, when the Golden State Warriors where in town to play Celtics for the playoffs, they made this hysterical video. Let’s ask them how THEY pronounce our towns!
And The Winner Is?
According to Frommers.com, one of our greatest cities is also one of the most butchered. You know it well as famous people like Dennis Leary, Bob Cousy and less famous people like Jaybeau Jones, were born there. Let’s ask Frommers.com who the winner is:
Worcester!
It looks like there should be three syllables and an “r” sound somewhere in the middle, but looks can be deceiving—and, as anybody who has pulled off a successful JFK impersonation will tell you, New Englanders drop “r”s all over the place. Go with WUSS-ter for this central Massachusetts city. The town was named after Worcester in England, so not incidentally, you’ll pronounce it the same way there, too.
Actually, Frommers.com, you too are sadly mistaken. Everyone from around here knows it’s pronounced, “Wister.”
Even and article about America’s Most Mispronounced City, mispronounced it.
