Museum Of Science Trains At Science Park Is Here
All aboard! The Museum Of Science Trains At Science Park exhibit is here! This wonderful and informative annual temporary exhibit comes to the Boston Museum of Science each holiday season.
It’s fascinating to imagine a time before jet travel, back to a world where the locomotive took us where we needed to go. While long distance personal travel is mostly by air these days, much of the goods we use to manufacture or purchase are still delivered by rail.
Train Fun Facts
-Did you know that the iconic Aretha Franklin ONLY traveled by train? She was afraid to fly!
-The term ‘horsepower’ originated as a marketing tool
A savvy train salesman knew that he needed a way to market his new product. He calculated how much power a single horse working in a mill could produce over a period of time, a figure that he dubbed “horsepower.”
-America’s first steam locomotive lost a race to a horse
-Today’s bullet trains can top 300 m.p.h.
-The world’s first travel agency got its start thanks to a train trip
-Abraham Lincoln’s assassination helped publicize train travel!
A train engineer named George Pullman used his train car to transport Lincoln’s body to Illinois, using Pullman’s new idea of a sleeper-type cabin. The news about this innovation spread, creating the first sleeper train car.
-A friend of mine, famous voice over actor Bill Saint James told me about his dream. When he was a DJ on the air in New York, he told me that if he ever made “stupid money” starting a voice acting career, he would buy a train car, and remodel it like a mobile home. Flash forward to today, Bill made so much money as the voice of NBC Sports and other national voice over jobs, he did it. He has his own train car! When he wants to go somewhere, he calls Amtrak to hook up, and go! What’s THAT cost?
Museum Of Science Trains
This exhibit seems like a wonderful and fun way to visit the history of trains and the railroad. According to the Museum Of Science:
Developed by expert train model makers who spent hours creating tiny trees and adjusting tracks to create an unforgettable Boston experience (including miniature versions of the Museum, Custom House, and now, the city’s iconic Zakim bridge, created by master model maker John Goodson of The Mandalorian fame), this exhibit is a great way to welcome the winter season with your friends and family! Presented in English and in Spanish.
If you want to make a day out of it, you can watch the screenings of train movies “The Polar Express” and “Thomas And Friends 4-D:Bubbling Boilers.”
