Massachusetts Residents Apologize More but Mean it Less – Study
I’m sorry. Two words which sometimes take so much to utter. And even when uttered, were they actually meant? Did that “I’m sorry” have meaning or was it empty and just for show?
A new study by Preply looked at our apologies and compared them from state to state to find out which states apologize the most… and (maybe even more interestingly) who actually means it when they say it. They uncovered some interesting info so let’s run through some of the locally pertinent nuggets, then I’ll link to the entire study so you can go bathe in all of the apologetic data yourself.
The study found that Massachusetts residents have no problem apologizing. Unfortunately, though, those apologies are pretty empty half the time.
Bay State residents apologize 3.36 times a day according to the study. That puts us in 13th place in the country as far as our frequencies of apologies go. 12 states say “I’m sorry” more, 37 states say it less. However, Massachusetts gets a “sincerity score” of 47 out of 100. And you’re thinking to yourself, ‘what in the world is a sincerity score??’ I think the most helpful way to think about it is this: out of 100 ‘I’m sorry’s in Massachusetts, 47 were sincere while 53 of those apologies were not. We’re the 9th most insincere state when we’re dishing out apologies. California barely ever means their apologies, they rank #1 most insincere in the US.
So what does this mean for you? People will apologize to you when they inconvenience you in Massachusetts – but – most of the time it’s just for you and your feelings because 53% of the time the person who said it doesn’t really care one bit. And for some reason this doesn’t surprise me. Oddly it kind of brings me comfort and makes me feel home. Man, we’re weird in Massachusetts. I got two middle fingers on the way to work today and I feel like it’s gonna be an A-OK day.
I’m really sorry if this article made you feel disappointed about Massachusetts. But to tell the truth, I’m currently part of the 53%. Have a great day!
