If You Can, Can, Can…You Should See Moulin Rouge on Broadway Right Now!
Moulin Rouge! The Musical, is now gracing the stage in Boston! The Broadway musical is a recipient of 10 Tony Awards and honored with the title of “Best Musical.” Catch the dazzling performances at the Citizens Bank Opera House from January 16 to February 4, 2024. Tickets can be found here.
The Plot
If you were a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s iconic film, Moulin Rouge, then the love story of Christian and Satine will be a familiar one. Satine is a dancer at the famous nightclub, Moulin Rouge. One night after a glittery performance, she mistakenly falls in love with the poor American songwriter named Christian. The problem is, she was meant to meet the wealthy Duke that night. The musical becomes the story of Satine and Christian’s secret love affair.
The Music
Moulin Rouge! The Musical pays homage to over 160 years of musical history, featuring compositions ranging from Offenbach to Lady Gaga. The stage adaptation includes the timeless songs from the movie while also incorporating recent hits that have emerged since the film premiered 21 years ago. If you saw the movie with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, then you’ll be excited to know that the signature song, “Come What May” is still featured in the play on stage. But beware to those who expect the music on stage to be just like the movie because, it’s not.
There are many new songs in the musical. Fans will recognize, “Shut Up And Dance” by Walk The Moon, “Raise Your Glass,” by P!nk, “Single Ladies” by Beyonce, “Chandelier” by Sia and many more. The modern songs may throw you off, but it’s guaranteed that you’ll know every song in the play.
My Review of Moulin Rouge
I was lucky enough to go to Moulin Rouge! The Musical on press night on January 17, 2024. From the moment I walked into the theatre I was blown away by the set up on the stage. It was big, vibrant, and beautiful with a big, bright MOULIN ROUGE sign. As a matter of fact, the entire show was bright and beautiful with action in every scene.
I can’t say enough about the costumes and set design. I have been to dozens of musicals and this one, by far, had the most beautiful set. There were colorful layers, curtains, buildings and lights. The costumes were dazzling in all ways. Satine, the queen of diamonds, lived up to her role with her incredible outfits. In terms of the production, it was filled with energy and familiar music. My feet were tapping the entire show.
The one critique I have about the show is that if you think the soundtrack is like the movie that you saw and loved 21 years ago, much of the music is different. But if you familiarize yourself with the soundtrack beforehand you will be in good hands! Also, based on the sexual nature of the outfits and dancing, I would say that this show is only appropriate for ages 18+.
