50,000 New Names Added To Massachusetts Unclaimed Property List
For years you’ve been hearing me, and many others, on the radio telling your to check for your name to see if you have money waiting to be claimed at findmassmoney.gov. Recently, the State Treasurer’s’ office announced that 50,000 new names have been added to the Massachusetts unclaimed property list.
Honestly, I’ve had good luck with this. Finding money for myself on a couple of occasions and my husband once. In fact, during 2020 COVID-19 shutdown, I searched for my name and found over $1000. That was a win! Before that, I had found a much smaller amount, but it all adds up! Hey, you’ve got nothing to lose but a few seconds of your time to search. If you do find money, of course it’ll take a bit longer than that to fill out a form and wait for your money. But it’s YOUR money, that’s the point.
As explained in an article in The Patch (Massachusetts), the state treasurer’s office is holding on to about 3.4 billion dollars in unclaimed property. And yes, that includes these 50,000 new names. Or they could be old names with new entries added. So, it’s worth your time to check your name again. The Treasurer’s office does an update 2 times a year, and this is the latest update.
It’s For Real
People often ask if this is legit. I can tell you it comes from a government office, not some scam website. So, you are not at risk just searching for your name. It’s free and really easy to use. I used the big check I got in 2020 to help with a bathroom renovation project. It really came in handy!
According to The Patch, “The state’s database of unclaimed property has been updated, but the newly added names will also be published in the Boston Globe and Boston Herald in March.” If that’s your preferred method, be on the lookout soon. The State Treasurer is Deborah Goldberg and she said, “One in 10 people in this state are owed money and one of them could be you,” in a recent news release. She also mentioned you can call her office to check for your name. That number is: (617) 367-0400, and the office is open Monday through Friday from 8:45am -3:30pm. However, the best way to check is through findmassmoney.gov
What are the odds you have unclaimed property waiting for you? Pretty good, actually. Pick up a copy of the Sunday Globe and see if you're in our Notice of Names! pic.twitter.com/Lvvf8yL9vm
