It's quite a title to hold. The top spot on the planet for a getaway this year. One New England Town ranks #1 vacation destination in the world for 2024. That honor was recently bestowed upon a quintessential New England seaside town by Real Simple magazine.

It's not on the Cape, and it's not Rhode Island. The people at Real Simple went to work in finding you the top travel spots worldwide. Using travel pros, they complied a comprehensive list to help with your vacation plans this year.

The natural. majestic beauty of National Parks will be huge draw again this year, according to the publication. Some of the most popular parks include Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, Yellowstone National Park (ID, MT, WY) and the Great Smokey Mountain in North Carolina and Tennessee.  Travel to the Parks is expected to continue to increase, as reported by a AAA adviser,

And the Winner Is...

So let's get to the New England Town that ranks #1 vacation destination in the world for 2024. Formerly a sleepy fishing village, this town is now known as a popular beach haven offering plenty of arts, food, entertainment and sprawling coastline. There is no shortage of charm in this picture perfect spot. Congratulations to the peaceful and playful village of Ogunquit, Maine!

My husband and I only discovered this gem of a destination about 10 years ago. The food is fabulous, the people are friendly and the beach is beautiful. Walk the famous Marginal way, along the beach. Join in a big ole sing-a-long at the hugely popular Front Porch Piano Bar and eat the freshest seafood until your heart's content. There are art galleries, plays, live music and so much more than beach in this idyllic destination.

Ogunquit Beach

Ogunquit is the perfect getaway for families, friends and fur babies. They are pretty dog friendly. We stayed in an inn that allowed pets and ate at outdoor restaurants that permitted dogs a few years ago. I prefer to visit Ogunquit off-summer, when it's not so busy. Try a June or October visit. You won't be disappointed.

We live in New England, we know how lucky we are. Mountains, beaches, woods, and beautiful historic cities are all within a very reasonable distance, no matter where you live. We know we live in the best place on earth, and are always happy to share that opinion. Well, here's another reason to brag. Travel + Leisure named 4 islands in New England in their Best of 15 list! Tally it up. 26.6% of the best of the best are in New England.

Every year, the publication asks it's readers to express their opinions on their travel experiences in a survey, in their World's Best Awards. In this particular category, Travel + Leisure had readers rate islands based on things like the beaches and other natural attractions, activities available, food, how friendly the people were, and the bottom line...how much bang for your buck.

The people have spoken, and named islands in  Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island as the best. Nantucket ranked the highest coming in at #3. It was followed by Mount Desert Island in Maine, coming in at #7, Martha's Vineyard at #8, and finally Rhode Island's Block Island at #14. Well done, New England. Well Done. Now, you know...New England Has 4 Of The 15 Best Islands In The US!

Nantucket Island

Nantucket is always getting accolades for something. Just last week Vogue named Faraway Nantucket as one of the country's most charming boutique hotels. The "charming" is what brings people to the little island off of Cape Cod, year after year. It's so quintessential New England, it looks photo- shopped. Life runs at a leisurely pace here. The beaches, light houses, towns and roads are the things movies are made of.  There's plenty to do, and nothing to do. Visit HERE to get there.

Mount Desert Island, Maine

Visit Maine boasts "Mount Desert Island is without compare, as the mountains truly meet the Sea here and offers one of the most spectacular settings on the entire East Coast (if not the most spectacular)." It's home to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.

Martha's Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard gives you all the charm and quaint you need with all the fun you want. It really does has something for everyone. The island is known for it's great beaches, biking paths, There are sweeping cliffs and lively towns. Quiet, spacious spots with room to roam, and of course great fishing. Fish for more on MV HERE.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Known for having some of the "most unspoiled beaches in the country," Block Island offers so much, for so little...of a place. And is considered the most dog friendly of all the islands. Grab your pup and hop on a quick ferry from the mainland to your island paradise. Cold beer flows, lobsters roll and nature trails call.
