The semi-sweet chocolate dots with creamy mint inside were born in 1949 and named after a Broadway show, “Junior Miss.” Where exactly are Junior Mints made in Massachusetts? There’s a factory in Cambridge that has been churning out the tasty delights in a building near Central Square.
I had no idea there were so many candy companies in this specific area of Cambridge back in the day. They called it Confectioners Row because the area was home to over 65 candy companies in the 1940s. I bet it smelled like heaven around there.
Who’s Your Daddy
You would hardly know the factory even existed if you didn’t look for the unassuming signage. Cambridge Brands is the name of the company, as discovered in an article from Boston.com. They reported that the plant is owned by Tootsie Roll Industries. Of all the original candy companies from the 40s, only the James O. Welch Company still remains. And they are the manufacturers of everybody’s favorite little chocolate mint.
The Cambridge factory is said to produce over 15 million Junior Mints daily. But Junior isn’t alone. The company also bangs out other movie theater faves, Charleston Chews and Sugar Babies. Oh, baby, I’m glad I don’t live nearby! What’s your favorite candy to have while watching a movie? And the name Junior Mints would imply there’s a senior. What happened to Daddy Mints? These are questions that might just keep me up at night. Pass the candy, would you?
