Thank your grandma for the latest McDonald’s drop. They’re bringing a new McFlurry to its menus. The fast-food chain announced a new Grandma McFlurry, which will be available starting May 21 for a limited time.

“Grandmas have always held a special place in our hearts, and today they’re having a major moment influencing culture — inspiring trends in fashion, decor, and now, even food with our newest McFlurry,” Tariq Hassan, the chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s, shared with Food & Wine.

“The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we’re excited to give our fans that experience while honoring the grandma figure in all our lives.”

The McFlurry includes “syrup and chopped candy pieces” blended with vanilla soft serve ice cream.

According to Reddit users, those candy pieces are butterscotch flavored, similar to Werther’s Original candy. Some say it's meant to honor “all the candies grandmas tend to hide in their purses, blended into the classic McDonald's vanilla soft serve.”

Nation’s Restaurant News reported that Marcelo Fajnerman, McDonald’s vice president of menu strategy, said the Grandma McFlurry was created by a culinary team member who is a grandmother.

The Grandma McFlurry Is “A Sweet Treat for Me and Grandma”

In celebration of the limited-edition Grandma McFlurry, McDonald's is offering fans another way to connect with their grandma through music. On May 21, the fast food chain will release two updated oldies to music platforms. These include a new version of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" by singer-songwriter Remi Wolf, and a cover of "Piel Canela" by two-time Latin Grammy nominee Jay Wheeler.

To kick off the summer season, McDonald's is also introducing Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile, their version of an ice cream truck, which will offer a free first taste of the new McFlurry before it hits restaurants. The McFlurry Mobile will visit New York City on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, stopping at senior centers and assisted living homes.

McDonald’s For the Elderly

Additionally, McDonald’s will also donate to Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly, a national organization whose mission is to support older adults experiencing isolation and loneliness. A report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine shows that more than one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.

This campaign follows McDonald's UK's initiative supporting Mental Health Awareness Week. In that campaign, McDonald's temporarily removed the iconic smile from millions of its Happy Meal boxes to encourage conversations between children and parents about the message that "it is OK not to be happy all the time."
