It did feel like forever, for a moment. And then it felt like a dream. Kenny Chesney came home to No Shoes Nation’s birthplace this past weekend, for a record 3 consecutive shows. I went night 1, opening night, Friday night. And frankly, I’ll never be the same.

What started out as a fun girls night out to see Kenny Chesney, with 2 former co-workers and a current fellow co-worker (and miracle worker), ended up with me on stage in front of  over 60,000 people. Come along with me as I unfold the events of this special moment and one that definitely “Don’t Happen Twice.” But it did happen, once upon a time in Foxboro.

I had a chance to meet with Kenny in the “radio room” before the show. He graciously congratulated me and thanked me for the support all these years. He mentioned that he released his first album in 1993, the year I started working and playing country music in Boston. Connection solidified. I was beyond thrilled he even knew who I was.

Needles to say, I thought that was cool and that was it. On to the field to watch the show we go.  But a few songs in, my friend/co-worker/boss, Dawn, whispered to me that Kenny wanted me to watch a song or 2 from the side of the stage to see the amazing view of all those faces. That was mind-blowing; looking out at all those happy, smiling, singing faces. It’s the stuff dreams are made of. And it’s what started Kenny’s love affair with New England. That connection and the passion of the fans is undeniable.

The next thing I knew I was given a insulated tumbler with the No Shoes Nation logo on it. Bonus, I get a keep-sake. I looked into it and it was filled with liquid. As you would imagine when I tasted it, it was a delicious margarita. Wow, what a night…But it was just beginning. One of Chesney’s beautiful and sweet photographers came over to take a picture of me with the cup.

The next thing I knew she was leading me further on the stage toward the crowd and moving quickly toward Kenny Chesney. What was happening? I thought. And why am I here? (And why didn’t I wear nicer clothes?)  My heart started to beat faster as we neared one of the most popular music artists on the planet. The man who’s music I had been playing on the radio, in my car and in my home for some 30 years was turned toward me and motioning for me to join him. My legs went numb and then started shaking.

Kenny Chesney was talking to me, thanking me and announcing I was retiring. He talked about our start together. And don’t remember much else. Thank God for so many of you taking pictures and videos! He had the crowd chant “Thank You Kruser” and all I could think was “I can’t wait to tell my mom.” This moment with Kenny still wasn’t over. He handed my an autographed New England Patriots helmet and put it on my head. Wait, did I just hug Kenny Chesney?

I walked off toward the side stage where I had been a fan watching the show. I was in disbelief and on cloud 9. People tell me they can’t believe how composed I was. But honestly, I was in shock. And I still am. This was a night I will never forget. It will stay in my heart forever. I can’t thank Kenny, his staff and Dawn for pulling off this generous, totally unexpected and electrifying surprise.

Did I “Feel Like a Rock Star?” Actually, no. I felt such respect and appreciation for this man, his music and his sweet, unselfish soul. Can “I Go Back?”  I wish.
