CBS Launching ‘Boston Blue’ with Donnie Wahlberg Following ‘Blue Bloods’ Finale
CBS is set to launch “Boston Blue,” starring Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Reagan. The new show starts after “Blue Bloods” wrapped up its 14-season run in December.
The story shifts to Massachusetts, where Detective Reagan faces new challenges with the Boston Police Department. He teams up with Detective Lena Peters, who comes from a family with deep police ties in the city.
The news comes as “Blue Bloods” heads toward its final episode, “End of Tour,” airing December 13. CBS shocked fans when they decided to end the show last November, despite its strong ratings.
“If you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe,” said Tom Selleck to Entertainment Weekly.
Selleck, who plays NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan, wasn’t happy with the network’s choice to end the show. He pointed out how the show’s steady high ratings showed its worth.
Cast member Bridget Moynahan, who plays Erin Reagan, shared her disappointment about the show ending. She talked about how close the cast became during their 14 years together.
While CBS isn’t sharing many details yet, sources say “Boston Blue” will keep what fans loved about the original show while creating something new in the police drama world.
