Tony Award Winner Cynthia Erivo Named Host of 78th Annual Tony Awards
This June 8 at Radio City Music Hall, Cynthia Erivo will take center stage as host of the 78th Annual Tony Awards. The iconic venue sees Broadway’s biggest celebration return for the first time since 2022.
“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” said Erivo to Broadway News. “I am looking forward to ushering the theater community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”
Following Ariana DeBose’s three-year stint as host, the American Theater Wing and Broadway League tapped Erivo to lead the ceremony. Her selection brings a fresh face to the awards show.
“Through performances on both stage and screen, Cynthia has extended the magic of musical theater to millions of new fans around the globe — and that is exactly the mission of the Tony Awards,” said Heather Hitchens, President & CEO of the American Theater Wing, and Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League.
Fans can watch the show live on CBS. For those who stream, it’ll be available on Paramount+ in the U.S.
The eagerly anticipated nominee list drops May 1. The evening will celebrate excellence across all theater disciplines.
Just one award shy of EGOT status, Erivo’s collection includes a 2016 Tony for her stunning role as Celie in ‘The Color Purple’, a Grammy for the show’s cast recording, and a Daytime Emmy from a cast performance on the ‘Today’ show.
Between her Oscar-nominated work in ‘Wicked’ and upcoming turn as Jesus at the Hollywood Bowl’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, Erivo keeps breaking new ground. The August show adds another impressive role to her remarkable career.
