Massport, Uber, Lyft Agree to Deals Helping Rideshare Transportation at Boston’s Logan Airport
Massport, Uber, and Lyft have reached deals that they say will enhance rideshare driver and passenger experiences at Boston’s Logan International Airport.
These agreements would increase surcharges for rideshare trips at Logan from $3.25 to $5.50. These increases would begin in July. According to an NBC10 Boston report, the amount is still well below the $7.50 surcharge by 2028, which Massport proposed earlier in the year.
Per the agreements, Massport would expand its curbside access to Uber and Lyft users. In exchange, Uber and Lyft would add a car-sharing feature and shuttle service while adjusting their service windows so that drivers can spend longer times at the airport waiting to pick up passengers and drop others off. The announcement did not clarify whether the central dropoff and pickup locations at Logan would be allowed to continue.
In addition, shared rides would cost only $1.50.
“As Boston Logan continues to grow, we expect even more travelers to use Ride Apps. We need to improve the infrastructure to support them, as well as our other ground transportation services so we are able to move more passengers with the least impact,” Massport CEO Rich Davey said in a statement shared with NBC10 Boston. Davey added that the agreement will make trips to the airport cheaper for travelers while easing traffic at one of the busiest airports in the Northeast.
“While we still have concerns about increasing fees on riders, this is a step in the right direction,” said Lyft Public Policy Manager Brendan Joyce in a media statement. “It allows us to improve the rider experience at Logan as we continue to look for ways to equitably fund the airport’s future success.”
“We will continue to work with Massport to get travelers as close to the curb as possible and will always advocate for the best service for riders and the best platform for drivers,” added Josh Gold, Uber’s senior director of public policy and communications, in a media statement.
