A Mega Millions Ticket Will Soon Cost More. Here’s How Much You’ll Pay to Play
A Mega Millions ticket will soon cost lottery fans a bit more dough in Massachusetts.
Starting on April 8, a Mega Millions ticket will cost $5 per play, an increase of $2 per ticket.
According to a previous statement by the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, “This is only the game’s second price adjustment since the first ticket was sold more than 20 years ago and the first change since the current game matrix was adopted in 2017.”
The commission is describing the ticket increase as part of “A ‘mega’ overhaul with plans to be bigger and better than ever when the new and improved game launches in April.”
According to a Boston 25 News report, state lottery officials said that players will enjoy improved odds at winning the lottery jackpot and have more frequent access to larger jackpots, plus “larger starting jackpots and faster-growing jackpots.”
Below are some additional changes coming to Mega Millions in April, per lottery officials:
- A new format will include a built-in multiplier on every play. This multiplier will automatically improve every non-jackpot win by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X, up to $10 million for matching the five white balls.
- Breakeven prizes are going away. When a player wins, the individual will always win more than the cost of the ticket. The minimum prize winnings is $10.
- The number of Mega Ball numbers to select from in the game will decrease from 25 to 24.
- Due to the Megal Ball amount change, players must use a new play slip after the April 4 drawing.
Lottery officials confirmed that the final drawing with the current Mega Millions format will be on Friday, April 4. The first drawing with the new changes in place will be on Tuesday, April 8. Multi-draws for the new Mega Millions will begin on Saturday, April 5.
Since Mega Millions was introduced in Massachusetts in 2002, five winners from the state have claimed the Mega Millions jackpot.
