Largest Cargo Ship Ever to Make Port in City Docked in Boston March 24
The largest cargo ship ever to dock at a Boston port arrived on Monday, March 24.
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) stated in a press release issued to NBC10 News Boston that the MSC Verona, a 1,200-foot container ship measuring 167 feet wide and powered by liquefied natural gas, broke the largest cargo ship record when it docked at the Conley Container Terminal.
Massport said the ship spans the length of four football fields. On Monday, the vessel could be seen from various points around the city, including South Boston’s Castle Island and Black Falcon Avenue, from Deer Island across Boston Harbor, and from the Summer Street Bridge in the Seaport District.
The ship was due to stay docked through early Tuesday morning, March 25.
“It is only possible for ships of this size to visit Boston because of a years-long investment in the port, which culminated in 2022 with the installation of three new ship-to-shore cranes and a new 50-foot-deep berth to accommodate large ships,” Massport noted in its press release.
