New Cambridge Fire Training Facility Construction Nears Completion
Construction on a new training facility for the Cambridge Fire Department is nearing completion. When completed, the new training facility, housed at the rear of the East Cambridge Fire House, will enable fire crews to perform a range of hands-on training exercises.
The Fire Department of Cambridge’s website describes these evolutions as “water supply, a hose line, and fire stream management, ground ladder, aerial ladder, search and rescue, SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus), forcible entry, ventilation, property conservation, [and] high-rise and standpipe operations.”
While live fires will not be conducted at the site, the facility will use theatrical smoke to create realistic training scenarios that resemble zero-visibility conditions.
In addition, the structure will include facilities for technical rescue training. Participants will receive practical guidance on performing rescue skills such as high-angle and rope rescue, confined space rescue, and collapse search and rescue.
According to the fire department’s website, the new facility’s design will enhance the Cambridge Fire Department’s hands-on firefigher training initiatives, which are part of its National Class 1 Fire Protection rating.
