Mark Wahlberg, a Dorchester native and avid basketball fan, is returning to Massachusetts this October to film a new movie called Weekend Warriors in Shrewsbury. Filming is scheduled to take place from Oct. 3 to Oct. 8.
The Shrewsbury Select Board approved a request submitted by Apple Studios to film on Grafton Street at Flynn's Truck Stop. Filming will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Drivers should be on the lookout for potentially slowed traffic on Route 20 during the afternoon hours. The area near Flynn's will be closed, but traffic on Route 20 will be allowed to pass. Individuals who own abutting property will still be able to access their homes, location managers told the Community Advocate.
The project, which casting calls have referred to as Cheesesteak, features contributions from a well-known celebrity. Deadline reported last year that LeBron James is one of the producers of the movie, which is based on a 2023 German film about a true story of a father and his autistic son who wants to find a sports team to support.
Deadline also reported that Vera Farmiga will co-star in the movie directed by Stephen Chbosky, known for directing the films Wonder and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
"It's a great story," said Mark Fitzgerald, a location manager with Apple Studios, in a statement shared with CBS News Boston. "Mark plays a long-haul trucker, and his son has autism, and they do a bunch of road trips to bond to go to all of the NBA arenas. Mark and his family are Celtics fans, and his wife's family are Knicks fans. When the son turns 12, he's got to make a decision, and he has to go to all the arenas to do the math, so to speak," he explained.
Wahlberg was nominated for an Oscar once in 2007 for best supporting actor in The Departed.
