The final phase of relocating the iconic CITGO sign over Kenmore Square in Boston has received city approval. An effort to move and restore the sign will mark the completion of a redevelopment project at 660 Beacon St.
The repositioning, aimed at enhancing visibility and preserving the sign's role as a city landmark, involves moving the sign 30 feet higher and 120 feet to the east to maintain the original view corridor. This 60-foot-by-60-foot sign will be moved and anchored to new custom footings installed on the roof of the Beacon Street building.
According to a NewsCenter 5 Boston report, planning for the sign's relocation began in 2018.
A sign at the 660 Beacon St. location has been part of Boston's skyline since 1940. At the time, the sign carried a different logo. According to NewsCenter 5, the original sign read "Cities Service," a brand that existed before the CITGO name and its triangular-shaped logo were introduced in 1965.
City officials and state leaders, including Gov. Maura Healey, Mayor Michelle Wu, and City Councilor Sharon Durkan, highlighted the sign's cultural significance and connection with the Boston community.
"The CITGO Sign is a beloved treasure for Kenmore Square and residents across Boston," Mayor Michelle Wu said in a statement shared with NewsCenter 5. "I'm thrilled and grateful that so many partners came together to preserve this iconic sign for generations to come."
"CITGO may think of this as their sign, but in Boston, we think of it as ours," said Boston City Councilor Sharon Durkan, who represents Kenmore Square.
