McCarthy's & Toad, a new Irish pub in Porter Square that opened in April, has quickly become a popular addition in the Cambridge community. Its lively music scene and diverse menu appeal to Harvard students and Cambridge residents alike.
The pub, at 1920 Massachusetts Ave., features traditional Irish dishes and plant-based options inspired by Boston vegetarian chain Life Alive, including cauliflower tacos and eggplant pizzas.
Owned by Thomas McCarthy, the venue aims to revive the local music scene reminiscent of the historic House of Blues in Harvard Square, which closed 22 years ago.
According to a Harvard Crimson report, McCarthy said he wanted his restaurant to reinvigorate the Cambridge and Harvard Square music scene.
Stepping into McCarthy's & Toad, guests will find a relaxed atmosphere, superb acoustics, and no intrusive TVs or sports, making the pub an ideal spot for an after-work hangout.
McCarthy's & Toad hosts nightly Irish music sessions from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., along with Scottish-themed brunches on Sundays, trivia nights, and open mic events.
The pub offers ample space for live entertainment performances, with two separate rooms dedicated to live bands, setting it apart from other venues in Harvard Square.
Harvard senior Nghia L. Nguyen believes McCarthy's & Toad will offer opportunities for students and the public to explore the Cambridge community.
