New Hampshire's public safety departments jointly kicked off winter with a statewide safety awareness campaign. They outlined the following safety tips to help residents prepare for the season.
- Completely clear snow from vehicles before driving to prevent flying ice that can break windshields and force other drivers to swerve on roadways. Officials noted that, last winter, from December 2024 through April of this year, 33 fatal car crashes occurred in New Hampshire.
- Ensure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working correctly. According to officials, last Christmas, four people died from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home in Wakefield.
- Have extra food, water, and clothing on hand when participating in winter activities.
- Never clear a snowblower by hand. Use the proper tool to clear the auger and avoid putting limbs into the auger or the shoot.
- Recognize early signs of a heart attack, which are more common in winter, particularly among older adults who are shoveling snow.
According to a News 9 WMUR report, the news conference held on Friday, Dec. 5, was the first time all of New Hampshire's public safety departments came together at the start of winter to provide safety tips to the public.
More winter-readiness preparation tips are available on the ReadyNH.gov website.
