If your partner in Massachusetts seems extra thoughtful this holiday season, they might just be living up to the state’s reputation. A new national survey from Executive Matchmakers found that Massachusetts couples rank among the most generous in the country when it comes to spoiling their significant other.

The relationship study, which examined how Americans express affection through gifts and gestures, ranked Massachusetts third in the country with a “Spoil Score” of 72.7 out of 100. Researchers based their rankings on seven relationship behaviors, from how often couples surprise each other with gifts to how much effort they put into everyday acts of care.

The numbers show that Bay Staters take their relationships seriously. More than half of respondents from Massachusetts said that spoiling their partner is “extremely important,” and 46% admit to planning monthly surprises. Another 52% regularly take care of day-to-day tasks to make life easier for their loved one, and 21% spend more than $500 each year on small treats and tokens of affection.

While big spending can make headlines during the holiday shopping rush, it’s the smaller gestures that seem to matter most. According to the study, 83% of Massachusetts couples say “I love you” daily or even more often — a simple but consistent way to keep relationships strong through the winter months.

Only two states ranked higher nationwide, placing Massachusetts squarely among the top tier of America’s most devoted partners. And as local shoppers crowd Newbury Street or browse online wish lists this December, many might take pride knowing their romantic generosity stands out just as much as their spirit of giving.

Whether it’s a surprise date night, a thoughtful stocking stuffer, or just helping with the chores, Massachusetts couples seem to know the secret to keeping the holiday season — and their relationships — bright.
